Funerals and Celebrations of Life
Planning a funeral
The practicalities that follow the death of a loved one can feel overwhelming. But you don’t have to face them alone. Your funeral director will guide you through the practical considerations, and your celebrant will help you create a meaningful and memorable service. Whether you have a vision for the funeral, or just want someone to steer you through the process, you’re in the right place.
Types of ceremony
Cremation
The most common type of funeral in the UK is cremation with a service held at the crematorium. It is also possible to have a direct cremation (without attendees or a ceremony) followed by a celebration of life at a later date. This may be accompanied by an ashes scattering or interment.
Burial
Burials are usually comprised of two parts: a ceremony at a primary location (e.g. a chapel) followed by a graveside committal at a graveyard or natural burial ground. If you’re interested in a green funeral, I can share ideas and recommend suppliers.
Personalisation
With an independent celebrant, it is possible to personalise all elements of a funeral or memorial. We can weave in a whole host of personal touches, from cultural rituals and symbolic acts to special readings and songs. The service can be religious, secular, or a combination of both. And, with a celebration of life, we can really go all out and make it an event to remember.
I love creative and alternative celebrations of life, so don’t worry if your ideas are a bit unconventional. After all, you’re tailoring this ceremony to your person, not trying to squeeze them into a set piece.
Working together
My process is designed to be as straightforward as possible. Here’s how it tends to work:
- First, we’ll have a conversation. This can be in person, on the phone, or via Google Meet. You’ll tell me about your loved one, and I’ll listen.
- We will devise an order of service, as this will need to be finalised and printed. I can help you select any readings, music or symbolic gestures you may wish to include.
- I’ll write a draft ceremony crafted around your person, with their stories, personality, and the tone you want (whether that’s reflective, celebratory, funny, or a mix).
- You’ll read the draft and provide your feedback. We will revise the service until it feels right. If you are writing your own eulogy or tribute, I can support you with that, too.
- On the day of the funeral, I’ll arrive early to greet you and run through any questions or concerns. Then I’ll officiate the service with sensitivity and care. My job is to hold the space so that you and your guests can focus on being present.
Why words matter
Funerals are one of those times in life when words really count. A good funeral ceremony can bring comfort, laughter and tears. A bad one can feel like a missed opportunity to truly honour someone. As a celebrant, my job is to a picture of a real person, not a saint or a stereotype. Together, we will find the right words to celebrate your loved one.
Practical details and pricing
I’m based in Greater Manchester and available for services in the surrounding areas, including Cheshire. I’m also happy to discuss travel further afield if needed. I charge £230 per funeral service. Like most celebrants, I do not charge for ceremonies for babies and infants.
