There are SO many types of wedding celebrant – the impeccably dressed celebrant-cum-planner (clipboard in hand, not a hair out of place); the bold-print-wearing free spirit already planning your handfasting; the alternative celebrant who’s thrilled you’re walking down the aisle to death metal; the larger-than-life celebrant who has your whole family in stitches within minutes; and the kind, sensible celebrant who reminds you of your old geography teacher (retired now, and doing weddings instead). I like to think of myself as a mix of these types (apart from the teacher). I’m little bit of everything; all rolled into one (cue Meredith Brooks).
I strongly believe that working with your celebrant should be one of the most joyful and least stressful parts of your wedding. To me, it should feel like sitting down with a good friend, chatting and laughing and throwing ideas around, and then trusting them to work their magic and deliver something they know you’ll love. Because with friends, there is no judgment. It’s a safe space. And they take your big day personally.
A lot of celebrants say much the same thing when they’re talking about what they offer. We’ve all gone through the training. We all understand that personalisation, creativity, originality, humour and storytelling are usually why couples choose to have celebrant-led weddings, and we can all write ceremony scripts. Sure, some celebrants have specialisms that others don’t (like handfasting), but we can all do the job! Other than price, the main point of difference is who we are. Most couples want someone they click with, someone whose vibe they love, someone whose outlook, demeanour, tone of voice, and values match their own.
So, who am I? And am I right for you?
I’m a professional writer with 15+ years’ experience. I started as a playwright, following a theatre and performance degree. I then moved into features writing, starting with a luxury lifestyle publication, before shifting into content marketing. Most of the time, I was ghost-writing for business leaders, interviewing them to get their insights before turning those insights into engaging content. Understanding people – their personality, tone and what’s important to them – and telling their story in their way, has always been my strength.
On the personal side, I’m an ambivert. An empath. A Sagittarius. A feminist (trans-inclusionary). I’m bisexual. I’m politically engaged. I’m an animal lover with a cat and a rabbit (both rescues) and a snake my ex left when we broke up. I love tattoos (I have five). I have an eclectic taste in music, from heavy metal and punk to electro and pop, as well as some embarrassing outliers like John Mayer (I’m sorry). I always have a keychain with a miniature bottle of sugar water in my handbag to revive ailing bees, and I love being outside. My hobbies include snow sports (former ski instructor), CrossFit, Dungeons and Dragons and getting brunch with the girls.
